The Bruce County Genealogical Society was founded on March 20, 1989. It operates as a non-profit and unaffiliated organization. Its purpose is to support ancestry and family history in Bruce County, Ontario. We are proud of the many varied resources available through our efforts.
Members and friends enjoy genealogy, meeting to network, and assisting others with research. The desire is to promote education as well as to encourage high standards and accuracy.
A novice will find information about the county in our superb library. An expert will also find information about faraway places in our superb collection of books, maps and artifacts. The publishing group is dedicated to finding and printing rare documents and research aids. Others transcribe facts from repositories and cemeteries; these records too are then published. Our newsletter, Bruce Bulletin, contains shorter articles and features helpful guides for members. The website specializes in queries, local news, and history. However, links can take you throughout the county or around the world. That is, genealogically speaking.
Speakers, programs, workshops and courses illustrate basic tools for genealogy. You’ll learn what you can expect to find. You’ll discover where to look for the records you need. Learn how to research these records and how to interpret and prove your data. Additionally, you’ll find out how to organize your information. You’ll discover what works for others searching the same places.
If you are lucky, you’ll meet a distant cousin looking for your branch of the family!
Bio: Kristen den Hartog is a novelist and non-fiction writer whose work has been shortlisted for the Trillium Award and won the Alberta Trade Fiction Book of the Year Award. The Roosting Box is her seventh book, and was shortlisted for the 2024 Toronto Book Award, whose jury called it a “heartbreaking and humane … tapestry of lives lived.” She lives in Toronto and in Lyndhurst, Ontario.
After many years of keeping our membership fees unchanged, the Bruce County Genealogical Society will be adjusting its rates for 2027 Memberships Renewals and New Memberships. This modest increase reflects the rising costs of producing and mailing our quarterly “Bruce Bulletin”, as well as the need to bring our membership fees more in line with those of other genealogical societies in our area.
We remain committed to keeping membership affordable while continuing to provide valuable resources, programs, publications, and opportunities to connect with others who share an interest in family history and the heritage of Bruce County.
We sincerely appreciate the support of our members. Your membership helps us continue to preserve, share, and celebrate the genealogical and historical heritage of Bruce County.

New memberships received after October 1 will be carried forward to the next membership year. That means new members receive the remaining three months of the current year PLUS a full year of membership in the following year—a great way to get an early start on your genealogical journey!
